stj6  St. John

The smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands, Saint John is located about four miles east of Saint Thomas. It is also four miles southwest of Tortola, part of the British Virgin Islands. Its largest settlement is Cruz Bay. My favorite part of the island is Coral Bay featured here.  Rent a jeep and explore the island’s many hiking trails, tranquil coves, white sandy beaches, funky little restaurants, and more.  There’s amazing snorkeling and other water activities, including diving, sailing, paddle boarding, dinghy rentals, kayaking, and fishing.

Since 1956, approximately 60% of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, administered by the United States National Park Service. There are many well marked hiking trails – My favorite is Rams Head Trail –rams You start the hike from a secluded beach at Salt Pond Bay which is a perfect spot for a swim after the hike. Enjoy it’s stunning views!

St. John can be a perfect family vacation destination or a special couples retreat…

Where to Stay – If you are going with the family, it’s best to rent one of the many homes available on the island. Pictures of our rental house:

hammock Why Stay Here? Caneel Bay has been an alluring escape for loyal guests since its founding by Laurance Rockefeller. Opened in December 1956. Set on 170 acres in the Virgin Islands National Park on the island of St. John, the resort’s pristine natural surroundings and low-key luxury are its coveted signatures. One hundred and sixty-six charming guest rooms blend seamlessly into the landscape in close proximity to any of seven white-sand beaches that frame the resort. On-site dining options include ZoZo’s at the Sugar Mill, Turtle Bay Estate House, Caneel Beach Terrace, Caneel Beach Bar & Grill and Cannella, which offer an array of dining experiences and cuisine that honors the destination. Other amenities include Cololoba, an on-property boutique gift shop, M’Ocean Studio offering yoga and fitness classes, massage cabanas, and 9 tennis courts.
